Francesco Rettura is a PhD student in Clinical and Translational Sciences, Immunology and Microbiology curricula, at the University of Pisa. His research activity focuses on the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the most prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder causing a significant impairment of patients’ quality of life with a high social and economic burden. He is interested in IBS pathophysiology because it is heterogeneous and very little understood. His PhD project explores the role of gut viroma, the still little-known component of the gut microbiome, comparing IBS patients to healthy controls. Currently, Francesco is also working as a gastroenterologist at Pisa University Hospital.
