Short Bio

Pierfrancesco Visaggi is a PhD candidate in clinical and translational sciences and a Specialty Trainee in Gastroenterology at the University of Pisa, Italy, as well as a Honorary Researcher at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, United Kingdom, where he has spent 9 months between 2018-2022.

His research focus is on upper gastrointestinal diseases including eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal pathophysiology, and motility disorders. He is involved in the development of national and international guidelines on 1. Eosinophilic esophagitis (Italian Guidelines), 2. Dysphagia (United European Gastroenterology- European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility Guidelines) 3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease and dyspepsia (Italian Guidelines), 4. Pre-operative diagnostic workup of gastroesophageal reflux disease before bariatric surgery (European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility Guidelines).

He has presented several research works at national and international congresses (UEG Week 2018; UEG Week 2021; UEG Week 2022; DDW 2022; DDW 2023; SINGEM 2021; SINGEM 2023; FISMAD 2022, FISMAD 2023; Dr. Falk Symposium 2023), which have been awarded as “Poster of excellence” or “Best oral communication” 5 times.

He is author of 24 currently published publications, of which 17 as first author, with an h-index of 7 as of April 2023 (Scopus).

His PhD research projects involves the identification of non-invasive and minimally invasive biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of eosinophilic esophagitis.
