Short Bio

Alessandra Falleni is Assistent Professor of Applied Biology at the University of Pisa. She is Director of the Interdipartimental Centre for Electron Microscopy of the University of Pisa (CIME), member of the Center for Instrument Sharing (CISUP), member of the Italian Society of Microscopic Sciences, member of the Italian  Society of Biology and Genetics, coordinator of the International summer school “From genes to cells: a basic course of molecular, cellular and ultrastructural biology”

Her scientific activity has developed since the end of eighties and is characterized by several threads that have always mantained the study of cellular biology as a unifying element. Her research projects have been mainly developed by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, flourescence and confocal microscopy using both conventional and cytochemistry, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridation techniques. In recent years Dr. A. Falleni, in collaboration with other researchers, focused her interests on the study on neurotoxicity in vivo and in vitro with the aim to study the biological mechanisms at the basis of neuronal degeneration, in particular the role played by the ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy in these degenerative processes. The results of her activity have been documented in more than 70 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, 7 book chapters, hundreds of abstracts and partecipations in conferences.
