Short Bio

Filippo Sean Giorgi, MD, Ph.D. is a neurologist and an Associate Professor of Anatomy at the University of Pisa. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Pisa as a student of the SSSUP Sant’Anna. He obtained his Ph.D. in Experimental Medicine-Neuroscience at the SSSUP Sant’Anna and the specialization in Neurology at the University of Pisa. He has been a post-doc and a Research Associate at the Department of Neurosciences of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He also worked as a neurologist at the University Neurology Unit of the AOUP.

In the last decades, his research has focused on studying the pathophysiology of neurological diseases. In particular, his main interest has been the study of epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases (especially Alzheimer’s Disease) through a translational approach, by either utilizing experimental models or directly studying patients. Recently,  he was funded by the Italian Ministry of Health as PI for a project aimed at assessing the role of Locus Coeruleus in patients with degenerative dementia, and demonstrated, among other findings, that a more severe MRI alteration of Locus Coeruleus in Mild Cognitive Impairment is associated with a higher risk of conversion to dementia at follow-up. He continues carrying on MRI morphological analysis of Locus Coeruleus and cholinergic structures in humans, in collaboration with Fondazione Monasterio/CNR; in rodents, he uses morphological analysis and electrophysiological approaches in models of aging and epilepsy.

His current main research topics are:

  • continuing to investigate in humans and experimental models the role of Locus Coeruleus in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer’s Disease;
  • assessing the role of Locus Coeruleus in normal aging;
  • assessing the link between epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases.

His research has produced over 130 articles in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and several book chapters:
