Short Bio

Since more than 20 years, Prof. Batoni is leading a research groups at the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery, Microbiology Section, University of Pisa; her research interests mainly focus on: 1) Interaction between infectious agents and natural and specific immune system of the host using different in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo experimental models; 2) microbial biofilms and biofilm-associated infections; 3) unconventional antimicrobials with anti-virulence, antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties as new classes of therapeutic agents against infectious diseases; 4) pathogenesis of oral diseases with bacterial etiology.

Within these research fields, Prof. Batoni has participated or headed as Principal investigator numerous Research projects granted by National and International agencies or private companies (e.g. Italian Ministry of University and Research, Tuscany Region, Italian Institute of Health, University of Pisa, European Community).

Prof. Batoni has been referee ad hoc for several International Journals and Funding Agencies (e.g “The Wellcome Trust”; “The Italian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation” the “Irish Research Council”, the Medical Research Council, UK); she is Associate Editor of the Journal “Frontiers in Microbiology” Sections “Infectious Diseases” and Antimicrobials Resistance and Chemotherapy and member of the Editorial board of the journal “Antibiotics”.  

Prof. Batoni is author/co-author of 88 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and more that 100 communications in National and International Conferences many of which as invited speaker.
