SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Since 1993, Nunzia Bernardini directs and coordinates a research group dedicated to morphological and morphometric studies carried out by the following techniques: histochemistry, in situ hybridization, histomorphometry, immunoperoxidase, confocal immunofluorescence
Major research interest
Histomorphology and histopathology of the gut wall, with focus on intestinal neuromuscular compartment, enteric nervous system, intestinal mucosal barrier and wall vessels
Major research topics
1) phenotypic and neurochemical characterization of the cellular components of the mucosal, submucosal and neuromuscular compartment which ensure the proper function of the intestinal barrier and motility;
2) tissue and molecular remodeling of the intestinal wall in central neurodegenerative pathologies (Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease), inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulosis, obesity, in both animal models and patients;
3) neurochemical remodeling of the hippocampus in experimental models of Alzheimer’s disease
4) effects of nutraceutical molecules in experimental models of intestinal inflammation and central neurodegeneration;
5) tissue remodeling of mesenteric vessels in gastro-intestinal and cardio-vascular pathologies, diabetes and obesity, in animal models and patients
