Research activities

Ugo Faraguna coordinates the Sonnolab at the University of Pisa (www.sonnolab.it).

The ongoing research projects of Sonnolab apply electrophysiological and wearable approaches to objectively measure and understand how sleep affects waking activities and health, in a highly translational manner. More specifically, different lines of research focus on:

  • the role of sleep across critical neurodevelopmental time windows
  • the validation of novel wearable sensors in the detection of the sleep-wake cycle, via machine learning-based applications
  • the role of chronotype and sleep in the modulation of psychiatric and metabolic disorders
  • the role of chronotype and electrophysiological markers in decision-making
  • the exploitation of simple models for the evolutionary investigation of the role of sleep
  • the study of electrophysiological correlates of sleep mentation and dreaming
  • the interaction between trigeminal afferents, asymmetries, and sleep
